Positive Thinking…An experiment

I’ve always been intrigued by what the mind can do. A bit of history here:
I was in my sixth year in Primary School and I was having fun playing the board game Risk. I was having fun because I was able to win very quickly!
The board game risk involves using 2 dice or more and players have to roll them to eventually conquer continents and countries. Well that’s about all that I remember about the game :D If you’d like to know more, there’s always wikipedia. Anyway, the thing that blew my mind was that more than 50% of the time that I threw the dice, I got the numbers that I wanted! I was hooked.

I got home and brought the dice with me. I asked my sister to join in. She calculated for me the probability of getting a number with one six sided dice. Its 1 out of 6. I rolled 10 times and more. I got the numbers that I wanted 50% of the time!I didn’t know what was going on. All I knew then was that before I threw the dice, I told myself that I really wanted the number. I believed strongly that I WILL get the number that I want. Is that postivity or positive thinking?Had my brain activity affected or influence the outcome of the dice roll?

Interesting question here and opens to a lot of debate.

Recently, I played another board game with my friends called the aeroplane chess. It also involves the roll of the dice.
I applied the same methods I employed back when I was 12 years of age. Most of the time I got the numbers that I wanted. Again!

Interestingly, I could also cause other players not to have the numbers that they wanted! But this is also open to much debate hahaha.

I realized that my mind can actually influence physical matter like the dice. I am the one throwing the dice. Thus the thought of wanting the number, passes on to my hands which holds the dice and throws it, and the dice rolls. 50% of the time the number appears.

I wonder if I could actually influence non physical stuffs?
I am now creating a mobile application just for this. Watch for it soon.

Just came across the news at Channelnewsasia:

Stay mentally and physically active as one ages, advises MM Lee

It’s true. Also, I feel that access to technology like mobile devices can help in this area.
Games for mobile devices should be promoted strongly and be given a positive limelight to help everyone stay mentaly Alert.
EVERYONE should Play more games!!

Games like the Nintendo DS’ Brain Age and Sega Toy’s Brain Checker are good and I believe help in stimulating that gray matter of ours.

Calculating mentally versus using machines

After a colleague of mine played the game, she just let out her thoughts about the state of students’ math abilities in schools. From this year onwards, secondary school students are able to use their calculators for all math examination papers. It used to be 1 paper that does not permit any usage of a calculator.I guess it is widely thought that by the time students are in Secondary Schools, they would have the basic ability to calculate simple equations in their heads and of course how to operate any calculating machines.

I know there are *crazy* (not in a bad sense) people out there who can churn out answers to long math equations in their heads in a few seconds. But these will be a dying breed here I guess.
Anyway she said something about future people not able to add up their grocery bill without fishing out their mobile phones form their pockets that can do basic calculations for them.

Are our minds becoming lazier or that we simply choose to make use of technology so that we can better make use of our gray matter for other more crucial decisions in life?
Are we too reliant on technology?

Think Fast: Student Reviews and thoughts

Honestly this is the first game I’ve ever created that has any value educationally. All other games that I’ve done before are just simplistic fun to while away your time.
I hope to go into this form of game design that are fun and at the same time educational. The idea of this game came to me when I was just playing with a good friend of mine at a chocolate shop. We challenged each other to get the correct total sum of the prices of two different bags of chocolates within 5 seconds.

I came out champs of course. Hahaha. (After I let her play the game, she turned out to be better than me actually. Felt so silly being beaten after that :/ )
Anyway, I let some of my students in school tried out the game and here’s what they have to say collectively:
*note: These are unedited
A good place for training mental calculation, building up maths skills for expansion, even during sec 2 and 3s. But it’d even be better if other maths combination are added into it. - Lim Si Ying
Test your mind, challenging, this game is good but a little boring -Darren Long
Fun and challenging - Jonathan Wee
Nice, quite creative - Yusuff
Think Fast is fun and challenging, good for maths - Anon
A bit easy; hard levels give more time - Anon
Questions can be harder and more confusing - Anon

Yup those are their thoughts. I will be coming up with an updated version to improve on the answer choices so that it will force players to really calculate mentally in their head in order to win.
